Dropshipping Paint by Numbers from China: Real Transit Times

Paint by numbers is an awkward product to dropship. It is flat but not thin, it is printed on a surface that creases, and it often ships to a customer who has never bought from you before and will judge you entirely on the parcel that arrives. Done badly it produces returns and one-star reviews. Done properly it is one of the cheapest ways to validate a new design before you commit to stock.

Here is what actually happens between an order landing in your store and a canvas arriving on a doorstep.

Step one: your order file

Every dropship supplier needs the same fields, in the same order, every day: order ID, SKU, quantity, customer name, full address, phone (required for most carriers), e-mail, and any customer note. Send it as a CSV or a shared sheet with one row per order.

Two details cause most delays. First, phone numbers — carriers in many markets will not deliver without one. Second, address format — send the address as your customer typed it, not reformatted; automated reformatting is how "Flat 3" becomes "Flat3" and the parcel comes back.

Step two: pick, pack and blind packing

Blind shipping means the parcel carries no supplier identity: no factory invoice, no Chinese-language promotional material, no supplier name on the label. What it cannot remove is the country of origin on the customs declaration where the law requires it — any supplier who promises otherwise is either breaking the rules or lying to you.

For paint by numbers specifically, the packing that survives transit is:

  • The folded canvas inside a printed paper band, not loose.
  • The kit in a rigid mailer or a padded envelope with a card stiffener, not a soft poly bag.
  • Paint pots bagged separately from the canvas, so a lid that opens in transit does not mark the print.
  • Weight kept under the carrier's next pricing tier where possible — it is often cheaper to split a three-kit order into two parcels.

Step three: real transit times

Quoted transit times are usually best-case. These are the ranges we see on actual parcels dispatched from Shenyang, door to door, excluding customs holds:

DestinationExpress (tracked)Tracked airEconomy
United States6–10 days9–15 days18–30 days
United Kingdom5–9 days8–14 days16–28 days
Germany / France6–10 days9–15 days18–30 days
Australia / NZ6–11 days10–16 days18–32 days
Canada7–12 days11–18 days20–35 days
UAE / Saudi Arabia5–9 days8–14 days15–25 days

Add one to two weeks for November and December, and add a week if the destination country has a low de minimis threshold and the parcel needs a formal entry. If your storefront promises "3–5 day delivery" while parcels take twelve, no amount of good packaging will save the reviews.

Step four: tracking that your store can read

Ask your supplier for tracking in the same format you send orders: order ID, carrier, tracking number, dispatch date. One import should update every order, with no manual matching. Confirm the format before your first order, because retrofitting a tracking workflow across a thousand orders is miserable.

What goes wrong, and how often

  • Creased canvas (1–2% of parcels) — caused by soft packaging. Insist on a rigid mailer.
  • Leaking paint pot (under 1%) — bag the pots separately and check the lid torque on the filling line.
  • Address undeliverable (2–4%) — usually a missing phone number or an incomplete postcode. Validate at checkout.
  • Customs charge billed to your customer — the fastest way to lose a first-time buyer. If your price point cannot absorb duty, consider DDP or a local warehouse instead of direct shipping.

When to stop dropshipping

Dropshipping has a clear ceiling: per-unit express freight is expensive, and it never gets cheaper with volume in the way bulk freight does. Most of our partners switch their top three designs to a 300–500 unit bulk order somewhere between 100 and 200 orders a month, keep the long tail on dropship, and use the freight saving to fund packaging.

We quote both models side by side — per-parcel dropship and FOB Dalian bulk — so you can see the crossover point for your own designs. Details of the programme are on the dropshipping page, and bulk pricing is on the wholesale page. If you are not sure which applies to you, send us your monthly volume and we will model both.

Test one design before you commit to stock

No minimum order, blind packaging, 3–7 day dispatch and a tracking file your store can import. Start with ten orders.
